Safety Spray Shields for Flanged Pipe Joints
A safety spray shield wraps a flanged pipe joint and contains the release if a gasket, bolt or flange face fails. Without one, a failure vents laterally at line pressure — directly across a walkway, into an adjacent unit, or onto whoever is working the run. The shield redirects that release downward into a controlled drip.
We build ours in South Holland, Illinois, from coated fabrics we run in production every day. Configure yours below and the price appears immediately — and because we manufacture rather than distribute, standard sizes ship in 7-10 business days rather than three weeks.
What you get
- Continuous visibility. PTFE shields carry a clear FEP inspection band; clear PVC shields are transparent across the full body. You see the joint during a normal walkdown — no patch to interpret, no shield to remove.
- Non-porous construction. Nothing has to seep through the fabric for you to know there is a leak.
- One-person installation. No shutdown, no isolation, no tools, under a minute per joint.
- Reusable. Remove for maintenance and reinstall. Tuck the drawstring tails rather than cutting them.
- Sized to the standard. Ordered by nominal pipe size and flange class — you never measure a flange.
- Built to order, shipped fast. 7-10 business days on standard sizes, and non-standard joints are a quote away rather than a dead end.
Acid and caustic service
Sulfuric, hydrochloric, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and similar media are the reason this product exists. A spray-out in those lines is a burn injury, not a housekeeping problem.
Specify PTFE for aggressive service — chemically inert across effectively the full pH range, with no degradation from prolonged exposure. PVC handles most common acids, salts and alkalis at ambient temperature and is the right economic choice for dilute service and water treatment. If you are unsure whether your media falls inside the PVC range, specify PTFE.
PTFE — the standard specification
PTFE covers effectively the full pH range at temperatures to ⟦450°F⟧, and it is what we recommend for nearly all process service. Clear PVC is offered as a lower-cost alternative for ambient-temperature lines on common media.
| PVC | PTFE | |
|---|---|---|
| Max temperature | ⟦140°F⟧ | ⟦450°F / 390°F windowed⟧ |
| Chemical range | Most common acids, salts, alkalis | Effectively inert across the full pH range |
| Visibility | Transparent full body | Clear FEP inspection band |
| Standard color | Clear | ⟦Tan / brown⟧ |
| Typical service | Water treatment, plating, dilute chemical | Petrochemical, refining, pharmaceutical, concentrated acids and caustics |
| Relative price | ~40% less | Standard specification |
A note on coated fiberglass
Some manufacturers argue that PTFE-coated fiberglass fails over time as the coating wears and the glass substrate is exposed. It is a fair point at the extreme end of service life, and it is why all-fluoropolymer shields exist.
For the overwhelming majority of plant service, multi-ply PTFE-coated fabric is the correct engineering and economic choice — it is what most of the installed base runs on. ⟦If you have an application where coating wear is a documented concern, contact us about all-fluoropolymer construction.⟧
Construction
| Component | PVC shield | PTFE shield |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Clear PVC, 20 mil | ⟦PTFE-coated fiberglass, multi-ply⟧ |
| Visibility | Transparent full body | Clear FEP inspection band |
| Interior stiffener | PVC laminate | ⟦PTFE⟧ |
| Thread | ⟦Polyester⟧ | ⟦PTFE⟧ |
| Drawstrings | ⟦Braided PVC cord⟧ | ⟦Braided PTFE-coated cord⟧ |
| Closure | Sewn polyester hook-and-loop, 3" lap seam | |
| Max service temp | ⟦140°F⟧ | ⟦450°F solid / 390°F with window⟧ |
| Pressure rating | ⟦150 / 300 PSI⟧ | ⟦150 / 300 PSI⟧ |
An interior stiffener lines the shield so it holds its shape rather than collapsing against the flange, preserving the containment volume that makes the design work.
The shield vents rather than sealing, so a leak releases safely instead of building pressure inside.
Sizing
Flange dimensions are standardized. Once you know the nominal pipe size and the pressure class, ASME B16.5 fixes the outside diameter — so you identify your flange rather than measuring it. Both values are typically marked on the flange itself and appear on your line spec or P&ID.
Watch the class. A 6" Class 150 flange is 11" OD; a 6" Class 300 flange is 12½". Same pipe, different shield.

All dimensions in inches, per ASME B16.5. Provided for reference — for design or code compliance, work from a current controlled copy of the standard. Flanges above NPS 24 fall under ASME B16.47. Flange type (weld neck, slip-on, blind, threaded, socket weld, lap joint) does not change these dimensions.
Non-standard joints
Valve bodies, expansion joints, elbows, tees, couplings, lined pipe, Van Stone and oversized flanges are built to measurement. Send us the dimensions and we will quote it.
What is a safety spray shield?
A fabric shield wrapped around a flanged pipe joint to contain chemical spray-out if the gasket fails. It redirects the release downward rather than allowing it to spray laterally toward personnel. Also called flange guards, flange shields, flange covers, flange protectors and flange diapers.
Do I need to measure the flange?
No. ASME B16.5 fixes flange dimensions from nominal pipe size and pressure class. Both are usually marked on the flange and appear on your line spec. See the Technical Specs tab for the full dimension tables.
PTFE or PVC?
PTFE is our standard specification and the right answer for nearly all process service — it is effectively inert across the full pH range. Clear PVC is a lower-cost alternative for ambient-temperature lines on common acids, salts and alkalis. When in doubt, specify PTFE.
How do I know if the flange is leaking?
You look at it. Our PTFE shields carry a clear FEP inspection band and our clear PVC shields are transparent across the whole body, so leakage shows during a normal walkdown without removing anything. Shields that rely on a pH indicator patch only report a leak after fluid has worked through the fabric to that one spot.
Can I install on a live line?
Yes. Installation is external — no shutdown, no isolation, no tools.
Are they reusable?
Yes. Remove for maintenance and reinstall afterward. Tuck the drawstring tails rather than cutting them.
Do you cover valves and expansion joints?
Yes, built to measurement. Send us the size, rating, type and manufacturer for valves; size, model, and number of convolutions or overall length for expansion joints.
What are your lead times?
⟦X business days for standard sizes. Custom joints, X days.⟧
